Kitutu Chache Market Dialogue – May 2025
A listening stop at the bustling market centre to hear from traders, farmers and shoppers.
Context
Date: 14 May 2025
Ward: Nyakoe Market, Kitutu Chache South
Nyakoe market is one of the busiest trading hubs in Kitutu Chache. Traders come from surrounding villages to sell fresh produce, textiles and household goods. It’s also a social space where news and ideas spread quickly.
Key Themes Raised
- Roads & Infrastructure: Traders highlighted poor road conditions that increase transport costs and waste due to spoilage.
- Market Facilities: Calls for better sanitation, shade and storage facilities to improve health and reduce losses.
- Access to Credit: Many women requested affordable credit to expand their businesses.
What I Learned
Listening to market traders reinforced the connection between infrastructure and livelihoods. Roads and market facilities are as important as access to finance. I saw the resilience and creativity of women entrepreneurs, who continue to trade despite many obstacles. They deserve better support from both the private sector and public institutions.
How We’re Following Up
We are exploring partnerships with county authorities to advocate for road maintenance and market improvements. Our SME mentorship programme will incorporate sessions on microfinance and savings groups, particularly targeting women traders. We’re also documenting success stories to share with policymakers and investors.
